Easy Tips for Seasonal Lawn Care

seasonal lawn care

Taking care of your lawn is more than mowing and watering. It's something that requires seasonal maintenance and care. It doesn't matter if your lawn is sleeping under winter frost or fresh and green in spring, care is still required. Here are some tips from Scapes Environmental Design to keep your lawn looking great in every season.

Springtime:

When temperatures warm up, your lawn is waking up. Here is how to give it a new start.

  • Rake and remove debris, getting rid of dead grass and letting new growth thrive.

  • Aerate the soil if your lawn feels compacted. Aeration helps nutrients and water reach the roots.

  • Apply a fertilizer to give the grass the nutrients it needs.

  • Start mowing, but keep the blades high at about 3 inches.

Summertime:

Hot weather can be harsh on the lawn, which is why you need to take steps to keep it hydrated and healthy.

  • Water wisely, with an emphasis on early mornings or evening watering to prevent evaporation.

  • Raise the mower height a little to provide some shade for your soil and better moisture retention.

  • Dry and stressed grass is more prone to damage, so keep foot traffic in designated areas.

  • Spot treat weeds by pulling them by hand or using treatments.

Fall

Fall is a great time to prepare your lawn for winter dormancy or cooler weather.

  • Keep mowing until the first frost hits and gradually lower the height to about 2 inches or so before winter.

  • If there are bare spots, fill them in with seed to prevent weeds next year.

  • Fertilize one more time with a slow-release fertilizer.

  • Rake the leaves regularly to prevent mold and other issues for grass and soil.

Wintertime

Cold weather means less lawn work, but some maintenance gives you a better start for spring!

  • Try not to walk on frozen grass. Too much pressure can damage brittle grass blades.

  • Be careful with salt and de-icers. They can harm your lawn. Pet-safe alternatives are also friendly to the lawn.

  • Now is a great time to call your landscaper (like Scapes Environmental Design) to schedule your services in the spring and summer.

Every season is a good season for a healthy lawn. Spring is time for revitalization, summer requires hydration and protection, fall is about preparation, and winter calls for maintenance. Scapes Environmental Design is here to help you with your seasonal landscaping no matter what the season is.
